For the first time, the RPF flag bearer and incumbent President Paul Kagame has publicly shared the reason behind choosing to build his country home in Bugesera district, located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. During his recent presidential campaign in Bugesera, responded to the request of an artiste known by her stage name, Butera Knowless. She had pleaded with him to invite his neighbors for a get-together at his country home.
During today’s campaign in Bugesera district, in front of Bugesera citizens and others from different parts of the country, President Kagame reiterated his commitment to unity. Responding to Knowless’s question about meeting after the election in case FPR wins, President Kagame emphasized the need to compete, protect peace, and face challenges head-on. His words echoed the spirit of FPR – Inkotanyi, where politics, thinking, living, and working are aligned with Rwanda’s vision for development.
In the past, Bugesera was considered cursed. People were sent there as a form of condemnation, even likened to a place where death awaited due to the presence of Tse Tse flies. Under previous regimes, Tutsi individuals from across the country were transported to Bugesera, which was perceived as a hostile area. The plan was to massacre them, and those who survived faced the threat of deadly Tse Tse flies. In 1992, the Genocide was attempted in Bugesera, resulting in the loss of several Tutsi lives and the destruction of their homes. The tragic events of 1994 saw thousands of Tutsi massacred during the worst genocide tragedy of the 20th century.
However, President Kagame’s decision to build his home in Bugesera defies this narrative. He wanted to symbolize that every Rwandan has the right to live, regardless of location. By choosing Bugesera, he aimed to demonstrate that there is no cursed place in Rwanda and that development, security, and quality of life are shared across districts. Bugesera, once stigmatized, now boasts significant infrastructure, including ongoing construction of the next international airport in Rilima sector.
Prexsident Kagame’s deliberate choice to reside in Bugesera serves as a powerful statement against historical prejudices. It reflects Rwanda’s commitment to progress, unity, and resilience. Bugesera, once associated with tragedy, now stands as a testament to hope and transformation
